Spain’s energy transition hit a new milestone: renewable sources—wind, solar, hydro—accounted for 56.8% of the nation’s electricity generation in 2024, the highest proportion in history. Grid operator Red Eléctrica de España (REE) reports the figure reflects both soaring renewable output and a strategic tilt away from fossil fuels.

Wind energy remains the backbone, while photovoltaic solar and hydroelectric plants added significant capacity. Coal generation declined further, and gas-fired plants stepped in only during low-renewable periods. The year’s data point to advancing electricity decarbonisation, although REE also notes that grid resilience is an emerging concern—April’s regional outage underscored the need for network upgrades and storage deployments.

For consumers and businesses, the milder cost volatility of renewables offers partial insulation from global gas shocks. Meanwhile, increased availability of clean energy supports corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) and self-generation strategies. Still, developers must navigate curtailment risks and connection delays as renewables expand.

Spain’s 2024 renewable output demonstrates that clean electricity is maturing—but infrastructure must catch up to make green energy both stable and scalable.
