Overview
To commemorate the centenary of the Two of May 1808, the government of Alfonso XIII wanted to erect a monument that would recall the resistance of the Madrileños against French aggression. The project presented by the sculptor Aniceto Marinas was selected, and for its installation, the esplanade of the Alcázar of Segovia was chosen, where the Real Colegio de Artillería was located, where Daoíz and Velarde, two of the main protagonists of those events, were formed. The work, started in May 1908, took two years to complete, and King Alfonso XIII and President of the Government, José Canalejas, attended its inauguration on July 15, 1910.
