Salamanca’s Holy Week is renowned for the way its processions and religious brotherhoods blend seamlessly into the streets of the historic centre. Landmarks such as Plaza de la Universidad, Casa de las Conchas, the cathedrals, Arrabal and La Clerecía take on a special significance during this annual celebration.
Among the many events held in the city, Los Oficios at the chapel of the old University stands out. Combining religious ritual with academic tradition, this ceremony brings together the university’s teaching staff. Held on Maundy Thursday, it is considered an extraordinary academic assembly, during which professors wear their formal academic robes. Afterwards, attendees are treated to the traditional refreshments of hot chocolate and sweet pastries. The Descent of Christ is another of the celebration’s most notable events.
Holy Week is one of Spain’s most striking and moving celebrations. Faith, art, colour and music come together in ceremonies commemorating the death of Jesus Christ, particularly through the processions. Members of the various religious brotherhoods, dressed in their traditional robes, make their way through the streets carrying religious statues and floats known as pasos. Accompanied by drums and music, these processions create scenes of solemn and powerful beauty.
