The Gijón International Film Festival focuses on the latest developments in young cinema from around the world, showcasing films created by or aimed at younger audiences, with a particular emphasis on creativity, independence and fresh ideas.
Over the years, the festival has welcomed many highly regarded names from the independent film scene. Its retrospectives and tributes have featured filmmakers such as Paul Schrader, Aki Kaurismäki, Todd Haynes, João César Monteiro, Todd Solondz and Tsai Ming-liang.
The festival programme features themed film sections, seasonal series and retrospectives, along with other selections that add cultural and artistic perspectives for younger viewers and the wider audience.
There’s also plenty happening beyond the screenings, with workshops, round-table discussions and opportunities to meet filmmakers. Concerts and live music events are part of the programme too, adding an extra social and cultural dimension to the festival.
It takes place at cinemas and cultural venues across the Asturian city, with the Jovellanos Theatre serving as the festival’s main venue.
